Walsall Council has officially launched its Net Zero 2041 Strategy on World Environment Day, setting a clear path for the borough to become a healthier, greener, and more prosperous place to live, work, and do business.
Building on the 2019 climate emergency declaration, the strategy focuses on six key themes designed not only to reduce emissions but also to create new economic opportunities, improve residents’ quality of life, and build resilient communities.
Progress is already visible, with 860 solar panels installed at Oak Park Active Living Centre and ongoing work through the Walsall Energy Action Project (WEAP), demonstrating how sustainable initiatives can lower energy costs and create local jobs.
The strategy’s six themes will help Walsall thrive by:
Energy: Cutting energy bills for households and businesses through efficiency and renewables, reducing fuel poverty while supporting clean energy jobs.
Circular and Green Economy: Boosting local green industries, fostering sustainable business practices, and developing new skills to ensure residents and companies can compete in a low-carbon economy.
Homes, Workplaces, and Public Buildings: Improving comfort and lowering running costs by retrofitting buildings, while creating employment in construction and energy sectors.
Transport and Travel: Making travel healthier and more affordable by encouraging walking, cycling, and public transport, while supporting businesses in transitioning to electric vehicles.
Natural Capital and Land Use: Enhancing green spaces that improve mental and physical wellbeing, protect biodiversity, and increase the attractiveness of Walsall for residents and investors alike.
Resilience and Adaptation: Strengthening communities and infrastructure to withstand climate impacts, ensuring safety and stability for all residents.

To maximise impact, Walsall has established the Walsall Net Zero Partnership, uniting local organizations, businesses, and public bodies to coordinate efforts and deliver shared benefits. The partnership’s inaugural meeting took place on May 1, 2025, with representatives from Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, WMCA, Network Rail, Walsall College, University of Wolverhampton, and Walsall Housing Group.
The partnership will develop a borough-wide Net Zero plan, monitor progress, and ensure that the transition supports economic growth and social wellbeing for all.
