Walsall’s pupils inspired by live music tour reaching 15 schools in a week

Thousands of school children across Walsall were treated to an unforgettable week of live music in July as part of a borough-wide tour led by Walsall Music Education Service.

Over one week, the service visited 15 primary schools and between 3-4000 pupils delivering 45-minute live music performances to packed halls of enthusiastic pupils. The aim was to introduce children to the joy of live music, encourage musical curiosity, and raise awareness of the wide range of opportunities available through the local music service. Professional musicians from the team taught about rhythm and beat through covers of popular songs such as ‘Die with a Smile’ by Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars and ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry, along with old music standards that children may be unfamiliar with such as Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take Five.’

The popular end of year tour reflects just one part of Walsall Music Education Service’s extensive programme. Based at Walsall Arena and Arts Centre, the service offers weekly music tuition to around 3000 children. Sessions cater to a wide range of musical interests for all abilities, from strings, jazz, wind bands, orchestral groups to vocal and rock and pop ensembles. They also run dedicated lessons for children in care and those in special needs schools, with plans to extend their provision for teaching children with autism next academic year. The service also hold regular events open to the public throughout the year, these include the yearly Bandstand Bonanza at Walsall Arboretum in June and Christmas concerts.

“ It’s been wonderful to see thousands of Walsall’s children inspired and uplifted by live music in their own schools. Walsall Music Education Service’s tour is a brilliant example of how we can nurture creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of music from an early age. Music education helps build children’s confidence, discipline, well-being and educates the whole child. We’re incredibly proud of the team’s work in making music accessible and inclusive for every child. “

Councillor Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health & Wellbeing at Walsall Council
