Walsall Council Wins Large Employer of the Year Award

Walsall Council has been named Large Employer of the Year at the 2026 Juniper Training Apprenticeship Awards, recognising its support for apprentices and investment in skills development across the organisation.

The award recognises employers that demonstrate a strong commitment to apprenticeships, providing opportunities for learning, career development and progression. It highlights the council’s work to create pathways into employment and support staff to develop new skills through apprenticeship programmes.

“ We are incredibly proud to receive this award and to be recognised for our commitment to apprenticeships and workforce development.

Apprenticeships play a vital role in creating opportunities for local people, supporting career progression and helping us build a skilled workforce for the future. We are grateful to our partners at Juniper Training and to all our apprentices whose dedication and hard work continue to make a real difference across the council and wider community. “

Councillor Elaine Williams, Leader of Walsall Council

“ We are delighted to be recognised as Large Employer of the Year, reflecting our commitment to investing in our people, championing apprenticeships and supporting skills development across our organisation.

This win also reflects the strength of our partnership with Juniper Training, which helps apprentices develop, gain valuable experience and succeed in their chosen careers.

Thank you to everyone who promotes apprenticeships across the council, supports the recruitment of new apprentices and encourages staff to develop through apprenticeship training – this award belongs to you. “

Jacky Matthews, Head of Organisational Development at Walsall Council

Having previously received the same award in 2023, the recognition reflects Walsall Council’s continued investment in learning and development opportunities for its workforce. It also acknowledges the contribution of managers, mentors and apprentices who help create a positive environment for learning and career progression.

The award comes as apprenticeship opportunities continue to grow across the borough, with Walsall Council remaining committed to supporting skills development, employment and lifelong learning.
