Two more Cradley Heath convenience stores have been ordered to close following continued action by Sandwell Council to tackle shops selling illegal goods.
The latest closures bring the total number of shops ordered to close in Cradley Heath to six since the start of July – following an eight-month-long intelligence-led investigation.
Closure orders have been granted to close International Vape and All Day for the maximum period of three months.
Sandwell Council’s Trading Standards team successfully secured the closure orders after officers discovered illicit tobacco products being sold from both premises. The order to close All Day was granted at Walsall Magistrates Court on Monday (27 July), while the order for International Vape was granted at Dudley Magistrates Court on Thursday 23 July.
This latest action, undertaken in partnership with West Midlands Police, means both shops must cease trading and remain closed for three months, disrupting suspected criminal activity and helping to protect residents and businesses.
The council has also called for stronger powers for local authorities and supports Government proposals to extend the maximum duration of closure orders from three months to 12 months under the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Councillor Bob Jones, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Enforcement, said: “We’re serious about tackling illegal activity on our high streets. Securing our fifth and sixth closure orders this month sends a clear message that Sandwell Council will not tolerate businesses that break the law.
“We continue to work closely with West Midlands Police and our partners to identify businesses that are breaking the law and take robust enforcement action.
“We will continue using every tool available to disrupt criminal activity and hold those responsible to account.
“The vast majority of businesses across Sandwell make a positive contribution to our communities and local economy. We want to protect legitimate traders and make sure our town centres remain safe, welcoming and vibrant places for everyone.”
Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour remains a key priority for Sandwell Council, with officers continuing to work alongside police and other agencies to gather intelligence, investigate concerns and take enforcement action where necessary.
Sandwell Council is also committed to tackling the sale of illicit tobacco. Removing the sale of cheap and counterfeit cigarettes is an important part of the council’s work to support people to stop smoking.
