Primary pupils win banner competition to inspire litter picking

Twelve primary school pupils from across Walsall have been announced as the winners of a borough-wide competition to design banners promoting litter picking and tackling environmental waste.

The competition, open to Key Stage 2 pupils, asked children to create artwork for Walsall Council’s Community Litter Watch Facebook page, aiming to raise awareness of litter issues and encourage residents to take pride in their communities.

The winning entries will be featured as the page banner image—one each month for the next 12 months—highlighting the importance of community action to keep Walsall clean and green.

Winning pupils were invited to a special presentation at the Mayor’s Parlour, where they were celebrated for their creativity and commitment to the environment.

Winners:

County Bridge Primary School: Sophia, Sapphire, Anne-Claire, Avneet, Evie

Butts Primary School: Sehej, Saibah, Eesa

Park Hall Junior School: Zara, Aisha, Freya

New Invention Learning Academy: Ellie

The judging panel included Councillors Gary Flint, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Health and Wellbeing, Pardeep Kaur, Portfolio Holder for Housing Support & Resident Access and Kerry Murphy. The judges praised the quality, impact and imagination of the entries.

Councillor Gary Flint said, “Each poster was unique and inspiring, the creativity and talent on display was a joy to see.”

Councillor Pardeep Kaur said, “Your banners weren’t just designs—they were powerful messages. You’ve shown that positive change starts with us, and your artwork will inspire others to take action.”

“It was a pleasure to judge this competition,” said Councillor Kerry Murphy. “The effort and thought that went into the posters was absolutely amazing and shows just how aware our young people are of the effects litter has on the planet.”

The council’s Litter Watch team will display the winning banners throughout the year as part of wider efforts to support community-led clean-ups and promote civic pride.
