Busy spring and summer of resurfacing brings smoother journeys across Wolverhampton

Thousands of road users are benefitting from safer and smoother journeys after another busy spring and summer of highways improvements.

City of Wolverhampton Council has continued investment in pothole prevention, with resurfacing on major routes in recent months.

Key locations resurfaced and relined include Chapel Ash island, Ring Road St George’s and Stafford Road/Three Tuns Lane island plus many others. Much of this work has also taken place at night to minimise disruption.

It forms part of the council’s £10 million highways capital programme for 2026/27, which was approved by cabinet earlier this year and is focused on preventative maintenance.

This builds on £35 million invested in our highways over the last 5 years, with more than 560 square kilometres of carriageway resurfaced or treated.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: “We continue to invest in our roads so residents can benefit from safer, smoother and more reliable journeys.

“With more than 480 miles of road to maintain, we cannot resurface every road at once, so we use data led decisions to ensure investment is targeted where it can have the greatest impact.

“While potholes remain a challenge for councils across the country, we’re committed to carrying out repairs as quickly as possible while investing in preventative maintenance that keeps roads in good condition for longer.”

Other roads resurfaced as part of the council’s planned programme of work this spring and summer include: Old Heath Road, Wobaston Road/The Droveway, Great Hampton Street, George Street, Mander Street, Connaught Road, Price Street, Penn Street, Moore Street, Springvale Avenue, Lansdowne Road, Butts Road, Jeddo Street, Westminster Avenue, Victoria Road and Springfield Road.

Further resurfacing schemes are planned before the end of the year, including Stowheath Lane, Dunstall Lane and Nelson Avenue. Dozens of other roads have benefitted from surface dressing treatments – which seal and protect road surfaces, reducing the likelihood of potholes developing.

The council also continues to repair potholes throughout the city, with more than 6,790 fixed so far this year. Many footpaths have also been reconstructed and resurfaced too.

As part of the highways capital programme road safety schemes have been delivered, including projects outside schools designed to reduce casualties and improve safety for children and families.

More than 31,000 streetlights have also been converted to energy efficient LED technology over the past 5 years, reducing energy consumption and saving money, and council car parks have been upgraded with new technology.
