In 2021, there were 26,415 unpaid carers in Walsall, representing 10% of the borough’s population. Local authorities have a duty to identify and support young carers, of which there are currently 276 in Walsall between the ages of 8 and 21.
The voices of carers have been instrumental in developing the strategy, sharing their experiences of what caring is like for them, and what support they feel they would benefit from.
Six priorities have been identified within the strategy, for both adult and young carers. These include recognising the positive role carers have on society, ensuring their health and wellbeing is well looked after, that carers have adequate time for themselves outside of caring duties, and that they receive thorough information and guidance about what support is available to them.
If approved, the council will establish a Carers Matter Partnership Board, comprised of representatives from health, education, social, housing, voluntary and community organisations.

Caring can be a demanding and challenging role, that often happens unexpectedly. Many carers did not choose or plan to become one, so it’s vital they are supported in their roles.
Carers should be able to access information, advice, and practical assistance easily, without any extra fuss, so they can do what they do, whilst also looking after themselves and their wellbeing, and this is what the strategy sets out. “
