Walsall celebrates World Book Day with literary favourites and fun performances

Whether it’s a childhood favourite or a recent discovery, books transport us to different worlds and broaden our perspectives.

Families and children are invited to a special event at The New Art Gallery Walsall on Saturday 8 March 2025 to celebrate the day, featuring vibrant performances, stories, art, and poetry inspired by peacocks.

The Mayor of Walsall will join children of St Thomas of the Canterbury Walsall for their World Book Day Assembly on Thursday 6 March 2025.

“ World Book Day is a day to celebrate the joy of reading and the incredible power of books. Reading opens doors to new worlds, sparks imagination, and fosters a lifelong love of learning. We encourage everyone to pick up a book and rediscover the magic of storytelling. “

Councillor Pardeep Kaur, Portfolio Holder for Education and Skills

The New Art Gallery Walsall Event highlights:

Mughal Miniatures: The Peacock & The Princess: Performances by Sonia Sabri Company at 11.30am, 1pm, and 2.30pm.

The Funky Peacock: Funny, interactive poetry performances by Pep the Poet at 12.15pm, 1.45pm and 3.15pm.

Make peacock bookmarks with illustrator Bec Tonks.

“ One of the best things about working in the library is that I get to read and recommend books to people of all ages.

My top five books are Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” by J.K. Rowling, The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter, 1984″ by George Orwell, “Career of Evil” by Robert Galbraith and Midnight Chicken by Ella Risbridger.

They are my favourite books because I love fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. I recommend these to everyone. “

Sam Threadkell, Information Officer at Aldridge Library,

Walsall has seven libraries across Bloxwich, Brownhills, Darlaston, Aldridge, Walsall town centre (Lichfield Street Hub), Streetly, and Willenhall.
