A targeted operation was carried out early on 6 November to tackle the growing issue of untaxed and suspected abandoned vehicles causing disruption to traffic flow and local businesses in Smethwick.
Local residents and businesses had raised concerns about ongoing problems with vehicles being left on public roads and in business areas.
In response, Sandwell Council’s Environmental Protection Team and Neighbourhoods Services Team coordinated the action, ensuring support from West Midlands Police.
Sandwell Council’s Environmental Protection Team led the coordinated effort alongside partners including Penham Excel and Serco. The operation focused on Heath Street, Cranford Street, Fawdry Street and Alma Street, with the aim of seizing vehicles and improving the local environment.
The council’s Parking Enforcement Team also supported the operation, monitoring and taking action against vehicles parked illegally on double yellow lines and in other restricted areas.
During the operation :
23 vehicles were subject to enforcement under DVLA Devolved Partner Powers, seven of these vehicles were removed from the highway
18 Penalty Charge Notices were issued
£1,600 worth of fines were imposed
Heath Street received a full street cleansing by Serco
Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Sandwell Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods & Community, said: “This operation is a great example of partnership working in action. Abandoned and untaxed vehicles not only cause disruption but also create an eyesore and safety hazard for residents and businesses. By working together, we’re making sure our streets are safer, cleaner and better maintained.”
