Six new council homes have been unveiled in a West Bromwich neighbourhood to provide much-needed housing for Sandwell residents.
Sandwell Council, with grant funding from Homes England, has delivered six spacious four-bedroom homes in Whitgreave Street, working in conjunction with SWG Construction.
These brand-new, energy efficient semi-detached homes perfectly blend modern living with sustainable features.
Every property is equipped with electric car charging facilities and solar PV panels, ensuring residents can enjoy eco-friendly living and reduced energy costs.
The development includes a landscaped communal area and convenient visitor car parking, making it ideal for families and guests to visit. In addition, the development features a new access road, bell mouth, turning head, pavements, street lighting and essential below ground drainage and car parking.
Councillor Vicki Smith, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainable Development, said: “These stunning properties are part of our ongoing programme to build new, sustainable council homes across Sandwell to help meet the needs of our residents.
“With the ever-growing demand for council housing, we are expecting more than 60 brand-new council homes to be completed this financial year, which will provide high-quality, much-needed accommodation.”
Councillor Peter Hughes, Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Infrastructure, said: “I am delighted to hear that as part of the residential development SWG Construction has offered a range of opportunities to support the local community.
“Last November, two plastering students from Sandwell College were given the chance to gain hands-on experience on-site, and Tim Rouse, a former forklift driver, was recruited to join the construction team. Additionally, it’s great to see SWG welcoming Ben Hamon, an apprentice quantity surveyor, and Josh Yates, an existing quantity surveyor apprentice, to the project, providing valuable training and career opportunities for the next generation.”
Beyond construction, SWG Construction has been actively involved in community outreach, including donating labour and materials to decorate the Yew Tree Community Centre. A student from Nova Training worked alongside SWG’s painting trades, creating a brighter, more welcoming space for the local community.

As of 31 January 2025, Sandwell Council had built 527 new council homes since 2016 and is currently building 109 new council homes, of these 63 are anticipated to complete this financial year including the six in Whitgreave Street. The council also has plans to build a further estimated 133 new council homes by 2027. This makes a potential total of around 769 new council homes. Alongside this, the council is developing a future pipeline which it is hoped will bolster these numbers both up to 2027 and beyond.
