The introduction of an additional 48 hours per week of community patrols has been welcomed by those working and shopping in Walsall town centre.
Walsall Council has funded additional patrols during peak times, following feedback from residents and traders about community safety in the town centre.
Community support officers from RG8 are on hand to help reassure members of the public and help deter anti-social behaviour in and around the town centre.
The increase in patrols has already been well-received by local traders and residents.
Solomon and Jade are regularly patrolling the town centre and shared their insights of how it has gone so far.
Solomon said, “We are playing a vital role in reinforcing community relations, addressing safety concerns, and working collaboratively with Walsall Police and other agencies to create positive change in the area.
“So far, I have found this to be impactful and rewarding. I can see the difference we are making, our presence has led to increased engagement and positive feedback from residents and local businesses.
“While challenges remain, we continue to work toward creating a safer environment for everyone.”
Jade shared how much she has been enjoying building a rapport with the town centre community and added “…we are building trusting relationships. A lot of the people that frequent the town centre itself see some of the issues, and the patrols are helping us to efficiently address minor offences.”
“ It’s really encouraging that even in a small space of time, additional presence from our community support officers is making a positive difference.
More visible figures on our streets will hopefully make people feel reassured when going about their daily lives and make those who wish to engage in anti-social behaviour think twice.
We’re working closely with the police to tackle patterns of behaviour, on certain days or times when there is a particular problem, and although community support officers do not have the same powers as the police, we know their presence does have a positive impact on communities. “
