During Learning Disability Week, Morgan is celebrating his success with his first paid job. This opportunity came about after he completed a Supported Internship which aims to support young people with additional needs into work.
A structured study programme combining formal training and work experience, Morgan was placed with the Solihull Connect team for his Supported Internship. Morgan recounted: “I have learned customer service and time management skills, which helps me to support customers with confidence and be on time!”
Baillie Carleton, Library Operations Manager, is Morgan’s manager. He shared: “Throughout his placement, Morgan had always made everyone smile. It was evident that his confidence and customer service skills were growing. When he was about to complete his internship, I was contacted by the employment and skills team regarding potential roles we could offer. We were looking for someone to support customers using our self service kiosks, so this seemed an ideal opportunity for Morgan with his previous experience. Following this, we arranged a work trial before he started with us permanently.”
Morgan shared: “This role is very similar to the placement in Solihull Connect where I greet and help customers. I have become more independent since I’ve started.”
Baillie said: “Morgan’s been fantastic. It’s been great seeing Morgan’s confidence grow. Since he joined us, we’ve noticed some new regulars on Friday, the day that Morgan comes in! In fact, we are increasing Morgan’s hours starting next week to expand his skills in other areas of the library.”
Morgan added: “I’m excited to help with the story time starting next Tuesday. This will help me learn new skills and help the team.”
Cllr Heather Delaney, Portfolio Holder for Economy, Business and Skills, said: “It was great for me to meet Morgan and see how our support’s made a difference in his life. We always work to support our residents to develop their skills so that everyone can have an equal chance for work. Sometimes, young people may need support to navigate the world of work. Our Employment and Skills Team is here to help young people find the right training or employment opportunities based on their aspirations. On the other hand, there’s a range of support on offer for employers to build an inclusive team or upskill their staff. I’d encourage everyone to get in touch with our team to find out more.”
