Walsall’s new £32m recycling and waste facility delivers lasting social value

Walsall Council is celebrating the lasting benefits delivered through the construction of a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Waste Transfer Station (WTS) in Aldridge.

The £32 million facility will change the way waste is managed in Walsall by reducing landfill and increasing recycling rates. Preparations for the site’s grand opening are underway, with the date expected to be announced soon.

Across the duration of the project, more than £1 million worth of social value has been created through jobs, apprenticeships, carbon savings and community initiatives.

The project helped 42 local people into work, with 581 weeks of local employment created. 386 weeks of apprenticeships and six work experience placements were also delivered.

£10,400 was donated to local good causes, including Acorns Children’s Hospice, Walsall North Foodbank and Walsall Outreach, while 16 local schools and colleges took part in careers activities and workshops.

Community volunteering also formed part of the programme, with activities such as bulb planting and litter picking taking place, as well as the distribution of £700 worth of winter packs for vulnerable residents. Local businesses benefited too, with 67% of the project spend made within 30 miles of the site.

“ This project is not just about building a modern, efficient waste facility – it’s about investing in Walsall’s future.

“We are proud that, through this development, we’ve been able to create jobs, support apprenticeships, strengthen local businesses and give something back to our communities. It’s a clear example of how we can deliver the services residents need while also creating long-term social value for the borough.

“This facility is state-of-the-art and will serve Walsall people for years to come. I can’t wait for it to open and start making an impact.

The site, located on Middlemore Lane, is capable of handling up to 40,000 tonnes of waste annually across 19 bays, each housing two skips. A reuse shop with a workshop will operate on-site, where staff will refurbish safe, usable items for low-cost resale, further benefiting the community.

The Middlemore Lane project has also been recognised nationally, receiving a Silver Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme for its strong focus on workforce wellbeing, community engagement and environmental responsibility.
