Retailing revolutionised as Auto Trader launches new AI powered tools available to all retailers

AI Generated Descriptions and Vehicle Highlights now available to all retailers through Portal and Auto Trader Connect

Follows November launch of Smart Image Management which is already being utilised by over 7,100 retailers to optimise their adverts every day.

Advanced AI powered by Auto Trader Intelligence, underpinned by more than 80m visits and circa 619m combined search minutes every month, as well as 1.6m daily vehicle observations.

26th February 2025 – Auto Trader is giving retailers direct access to its wealth of data and insights with the launch of two brand-new AI (artificial intelligence) powered tools as part of its suite of Co-Driver solutions. Utilising Auto Trader’s unparalleled vehicle data and consumer insights, AI Generated Descriptions and Vehicle Highlights will help retailers drive performance and deliver retailing excellence by significantly reducing the time and effort required to create high performing used car and van adverts.

It follows the successful introduction of the first in a long pipeline of Co-Driver tools, Smart Image Management, in November, which is already being used by over 7,100 retailers to optimise their adverts every day.

Now available to all retailers, AI Generated Descriptions taps into Auto Trader’s wealth of rich data to instantly generate detailed and highly engaging vehicle descriptions. As with all Co-Driver tools, its powered by Auto Trader Intelligence, which is underpinned by over 80 million cross platform visits and circa 619 million combined search minutes every month, as well as around 1.6 million daily vehicle observations. Also incorporating comprehensive VIN specification details sourced directly from leading manufacturers, each vehicle is described and positioned accurately and in the most appealing way for potential buyers— helping retailers to showcase their stock in the most impactful way in just a click of a button.

Vehicle Highlights leverages the same powerful AI-driven Auto Trader Intelligence to automatically highlight the most distinctive characteristics and specifications of each car unique to the specific model, derivative, and even individual vehicle. The tool instantly pinpoints the features buyers really care about, based on Auto Trader’s unrivalled consumer insights.

Ben Holdaway, Managing Director, Abbey Park Cars, underlined the huge benefits Vehicle Highlights will have on his business, commenting: “When I first saw Vehicle Highlights and how it would be integrated into a dealer’s adverts, I recognised the benefit immediately, and it genuinely excited me! It’s a simple, easily seen, and unobtrusive addition to a dealer’s advert that highlights some of the benefits or features that your specific vehicle has. This not only saves time for the consumer whilst scrolling through various adverts but also brings additional information about your particular vehicle really early in their journey, helping your stock stand out from your competitors.”

In November Auto Trader introduced Smart Image Management, which in just three months has instantly arranged over 3.7 million images into the optimum sequence according to buyer preferences. The tool uses AI image recognition to automatically categorise images, as well as flag missing imagery, to ensure every advert is as eye-catching as possible to discerning buyers. Combined, these three Co-Driver tools will help drive performance and free up retailers to concentrate on delivering exceptional car buying experiences.

Commenting on the overall impact, Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader’s Chief Product Officer, said: “These new advanced AI-powered tools not only mark another important milestone in what will be a long pipeline of Co-Driver innovations, but also our ongoing commitment to helping retailers drive performance and unlock more profit through technology. Our tools have never been influenced by fads, and Co-Driver is no exception. We understand the challenges and pain-points our partners face, and we believe the benefits of these combined solutions, which are built on over a decade’s worth of AI investment and powered by our unrivalled data, will be far reaching and immediate.”

Developed by Auto Trader’s in-house team of over 400 data scientists and engineers, Co-Driver represents the scale of its data and technology capabilities and marks the pinnacle of more than a decade of investment in AI. To ensure all retailers can benefit, the full range of Co-Driver’s features are available as part of all used car and van advertising packages. They’re accessible through Auto Trader Portal accounts, and for those retailers utilising Auto Trader’s powerful suite of API solutions, Auto Trader Connect, they can also be seamlessly integrated into their chosen systems through their third-party technology provider.
